Revolution is again the word of our times. Since 2009, through different movements around the world, we have consistently seen more people in the streets giving voice to their desires and demands than in any other period during the past three decades. Because of the new communication technologies, now, there seems to exist a common understanding of the word “revolution”. Revolution is the hype. The word revolution and the aesthetics of resistance have become a desirable icon, most of the times without a living narrative, sometimes massively embraced by commercial means, while the motives behind and the specific struggles within different local cases disappear and sometimes even contradict each other.
“Global Revolutions / Local Contradictions” is an ongoing project initiated by the Mindpirates, structured as a three-part-event running throughout July to September 2012. Through a library, series of talks, film screenings, workshops, performances and public interventions this project seeks to ask the followings:
- How does the mainstream translate, reenact and make use of a so-called ‘political aesthetic’ into its own language?
- What happens to the ontology, agency and urgency of images coming out of an uprising when new communication
technologies promote a global mass distribution and repetition of those images?
- How do immediate social-political transformation processes influence the practice and aesthetic language of visual
artists and cultural practitioners living within or without a movement?
Mindpirates invited Dina Kafafi, Jens Maier-Rothe, Azin Feizabadi, Nine Yamamoto-Masson, Margarita Tsomou, Pauline Doutreluingne and Cynthia Iurinic to develop the program. Global Revolutions / Local Contradictions is an ongoing project structured as a three-part-event taking place from July to September, 2012.
