Doors open 7pm/Medea starts 8pm/Last Beat 10pm
Come experience something different. Take a journey somewhere new. Immerse yourself in the Black Sea and feel the beat of a night at the club. For one night only the SOUNDWALK COLLECTIVE out of New York City sails our verinsheim ship while your imagination runs free.
By exploring and documenting the world around us through its sounds, the collective abstracts and re-composes narrative sound pieces through fragments of reality to form distinct audible journeys.
SOUNDWALK COLLECTIVE
Soundwalk Collective is an international art collective based in New York City. Since 2000 they have been sonic nomads, embarking on never ending journeys, from retracing the path of Ulysses in the Mediterranean Sea, to the Rub’ Al Khali desert of the Arabian Peninsula, to the jungles of West Africa. By exploring and documenting the world around us through its sounds, the Collective abstracts and re-composes narrative sound pieces through fragments of reality to form distinct audible journeys.
Their live performances are diverse and often site and venue specific. They use a combination of custom-cut vinyl records with multiple turntables, laptops and various FX processing pedals and mixers. Although sound and music are the primary forces in the live setting, projection of video specific to each performance piece creates an environment that is unescapable and unique. Aesthetic refinement and conceptual narrative is paired with a performative impulse, making Soundwalk Collective’s shows intimate and powerful.
The Collective’s recent installations and performances were shown at Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris, the New Museum in New York, the National Museum of Singapore NMS, at the Exit Festival in Paris, Arma17 in Moscow, the MADRE Museum of Contemporary Art in Napoli, Abu Dhabi Art Biennial, and many more.
For the perfomance at the Mindpirates Vereinsheim on April 26, the Collective will present two sound works:
MEDEA
In the Summer of 2011 Soundwalk Collective set sail from Istanbul on a Turkish Gulet, armed with microphones, antennae, and radio scanners. The journey was to retrace the mythical path taken by Medea, along the entire coast of the Black Sea.
For the next two months they hugged the coastlines of Turkey, Georgia, Russia, Crimea, Ukraine, Romania, and Bulgaria. As they passed through they collected fragments of voices, music, morse code, all of nature’s elements and frequencies, that are then used to create a sonic journey.
LAST BEAT
Last Beat is a project of sound, architecture and club culture. It is the internal pulse, the sensation of a beat experienced as a seismograph, infra-bass frequencies, the vibrations of structures shaking to the breath of the music.
The Collective attached 20 contact microphones to the surfaces of selected clubs, from the walls to the windows, the ceiling, metal pipes, dj booths, and more. These recorded vibrations are used as the source sounds for a unique live piece that is by nature aesthetically derived from electronic dance and ambient music. It is driven by a beat that is innate in club culture. The vibrations found in the raw recordings are processed and used as textures and melodies, that are placed against the live rhythm sequences.
Original footage, captured inside and outside of the clubs is used as the visual component of the performance, and is processed and custom designed to react to the beat in real-time.
